Tools and Techniques

This week is all about tools and techniques in the LAK12 class. There is a rapid development going on now, with many tools being developed and used. Some of these tools are open source and some are complete suites of tools commercially available.

Different kinds of analysis use different tools. Discourse analysis has been done for many years manually by researchers, and also has a strong base of methods and techniques. Discourse analysis can use qualitative analysis tools or visualizations (Many Eyes).

Social network analysis work dates back to the 1960's. Similar techniques are now being applied using tools such as SNAPP and Gephi.

Social media analytics tools deal with sentiment and products (Omniture)(SAS), and Radian6.

Search engines can predict a flu outbreak before experts. Google Flu.

Mining global data patters to predict human wellbeing changes, especially in vulnerable populations are also new projects. GlobalPulse

David Dornan has given permission to use his word doc on learning analytics tools and techniques. I will post a link to this in my Google docs later.

I'm looking forward to hearing Shane Dawson on social network analysis using SNAPP today.
